Indonesia central bank to remain in the market to defend rupiah - deputy governor

Jakarta - Indonesia s central bank will continue to be in the market and will prioritize a market mechanism approach to defend the rupiah, one of its deputy governors said on Wednesday. We see the global picture, with the uncertainty still there. We will continue to assess and remain in the market to stabilise, Dodi Budi Waluyo told reporters. Southeast Asia s largest economy surprised investors on Thursday by raising its benchmark interest rate for the sixth time this year, as policymakers struggle to reduce pressure on the rupiah from surging imports and the country s yawning current-account deficit. The rupiah has weakened about 8 percent in 2018 and is currently trading at 14,600 rupiah to the dollar. REUTERS
